What to do when you go home after a Tummy Tuck
Following tummy tuck surgery, make sure that you have someone to take you home and who can look after you for at least a couple of days.
Will I have swelling?
Your abdomen will naturally be swollen for the first few days, but medication will control the pain.
How can I reduce tension?
You may have a couple of pillows placed behind your knees in order to keep these bent to reduce the tension in your abdominal muscles.
When should I start walking again?
You may not be able to stand up immediately; although you should start walking about as soon as possible.
When will my stitches and clips be removed?
All stitches are usually the dissolving type, however, any clips will be taken out after 5 days if used.
What about support garments?
A comfortable support garment should be worn for six weeks. You will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.
Will I have scarring?
Abdominoplasty does produce a permanent scar, typically across the full width of the bikini line. However, the goal during the procedure is to make the incision in a natural crease and location that is easily hidden by clothing.
When can I expect to feel fully recovered?
The recovery depends on each individual patient. Some return to work after only two weeks, while others take three or four weeks to recuperate. You can usually expect to be back to full activity after six weeks.
Heavy lifting or strenuous activity is not advised in the first 6 weeks after tummy tuck surgery. Moderate exercise such as walking or swimming is recommended until this time.
What if something goes wrong?
Contact your surgeon immediately if you:
- Notice any signs of infection.
- Experience bleeding.
- Experience a sudden increase in pain.
