What are the risks associated with a Thigh Lift?

Like all surgical procedures, with thigh lift surgery there is always a possibility of complications; however, these complications are extremely rare.

Will I be in a lot of pain after this procedure?

During the healing process, there is some pain and discomfort. This can usually be controlled effectively with painkillers.

What about infection?

Approximately 2 per cent of thigh lift patients develop an infection requiring soaks, antibiotics or drainage. In rare cases a more extensive infection can require intravenous antibiotics, hospitalisation and possibly further surgery.

Will there be bleeding?

The incidence of bleeding problems is very low if you avoid aspirin prior to surgery and allow sufficient recovery time to rest. Drains are generally used to collect blood for one to two days.

What about blood clots?

Very rarely blood clots form in the legs and these can, in rare instances, pass to the lungs. The risk of this complication has been lessened with the use of leg stockings, increased mobility after surgery, shorter surgery time and improved anaesthesia.

What about haematoma?

Extensive bleeding (called haematoma) under the skin flap is rare. If it does occur, it may require immediate surgery to avoid pressure and possible loss of skin segments.

What about seromas?

Infrequently, a clear fluid may collect, requiring needle aspiration (referred to as seroma).

Will there be bruising?

Bruising is visible after surgery (and can spread down the thighs). It will clear up in time.

What about swelling?

Swelling can also be very obvious. This can take up to three or four months to disappear.

Will my thighs feel numb?

You may also experience numbness of the skin around your inner thighs. It may take several months for the sensation to return.

Will I have scarring?

Thigh lifts do leave scars. However, thigh lift scars are usually located in a relatively inconspicuous location and, in the minds of many patients, pale in comparison to the benefits provided by the procedure. That said, scars are, unfortunately, one aspect of thigh lift surgery that patients must weigh against the benefits of eliminating excess fat and skin tissue.

When can I expect to feel fully recovered?

Depending on the individual patient, recovery times will vary. Most patients are able to go back to work two/three weeks after surgery.

After thigh lift surgery, it may take you weeks or months to feel like your old self again. The key is to be as prepared a possible to follow your surgeon's advice completely. For example, if you are physically fit when you have this operation, you will recover much more quickly.

What about post operative visits?

Four to five post-operative office visits are required.
