What to do when you go home after Otoplasty

When can I be up and about again?

Adults and children are usually up and around within a few hours of surgery. You may prefer to stay overnight in the hospital with a child until all the effects of general anaesthesia wear off, but for the most part ear surgery is performed on an outpatient basis.

Following otoplasty surgery ensure that you have someone to take you home and who can look after you for at least a couple of days. Also, use recommended painkillers as required.

Will my head be bandaged?

After surgery, your head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage to promote the best healing. The full head bandage will be used to support your ears in their new position for 7 to 10 days.

Will my ears throb?

The ears and head may throb or ache for a few days, but this can be relieved with medication.

When will my bandages come off?

After a few days, the bulky bandages will be replaced by a lighter head dressing similar to a head band, which is worn day and night for 2 weeks.

When will my stitches be removed?

Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about a week.

What is the overall recovery time?

The overall recovery time is about five days for adults and seven days for children. After this time, you can return to work or school, taking care to avoid bending your ears for about a month.

When can I exercise again?

Any activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for at least a month.

What if something goes wrong?

Once you're home, contact your surgeon immediately if you:

  • Experience shortness of breath, chest pains or unusual heart beats.
  • Notice any signs of infection.
  • Experience bleeding.
  • Experience a sudden increase in pain.
