Labiaplasty to correct vaginal change
after pregnancy

Labiaplasty is a procedure when the labia or the inner lips of the vagina are surgically reduced/re-shaped to enhance the appearance of the genitals.

Many women choose to have labiaplasty after childbirth as, during delivery, tearing and stretching of the genitalia may occur, resulting in an abnormal or unattractive appearance. In short, labiaplasty aims to ensure that the vagina returns to its pre-pregnancy state.

Tell me more about how childbirth affects the genitalia
After childbirth, the vaginal tissues lose their tone - thereby increasing the size of the vaginal canal. This condition can cause less friction during sexual intercourse, reducing the pleasure both partners feel. Also, due to the abnormal genitalia, some women may also experience pain and discomfort during intercourse. Some women simply do not like the way their genitalia has changed after giving birth and wish for a better aesthetic appearance.  Labiaplasty can be a suitable option as a solution for all this.

Do I have to wait until after giving birth before choosing labiaplasty?
Not necessarily. Many women opt for labiaplasty before getting pregnant. However, doctors recommend that they wait for surgery after a healthy pregnancy and childbirth.

What will the surgeon look for when deciding if labiaplasty is right for me?
As with all surgical corrective procedures, the type of surgical correction depends upon accurate diagnosis of the problem. After evaluation, your cosmetic surgeon can give an assessment of the type of surgery you need.

Can’t I just have revision surgery?
Although each case is very different and correction is not always easy, in many cases revision of a contracted scar is enough. In many cases a labiaplasty corrects the problem by removing excess tissue, restoring a more normal appearance.

When can I get back to work after labiaplasty?
Women can get back to work within a week and have an active sexual life within 4-6 weeks.
What else can labiaplasty cure?
Labiaplasty (or vaginoplasty) can also correct incontinence, a potentially embarrassing condition for the mother.

How soon after childbirth can I have labiaplasty?
Doctors recommend that mothers wait for about a year after childbirth before they opt to have a surgical correction of their genitalia.
