What to do when you go home after Chin Implantation Surgery
After chin implant surgery you will feel tired and sore. You will be given pain medication and you will need lots of rest.
You should also have someone else drive you home on the day of the procedure. If you live alone, you should have somebody stay with you for at least the first night once you’re home.
You will be wearing a support bandage around your chin for 1 week after the surgery. During the first few days after the operation it is advisable to sleep on your back. This will prevent swelling on one side or larger post-operational bruising.
What should I wear after surgery?
Make sure you wear a loose blouse or shirt that does not have to be pulled over your face.
Will I be in pain?
You will probably feel tired, sleepy and suffer from pain especially for 1–3 days after the surgery.
When will my stitches be removed?
The stitches, which are in the mouth, are dissolvable.
What about swelling?
The speed of the healing is individual. Swelling after chin implant lasts 1–2 weeks.
Will I have scarring?
There will be inconspicuous scars inside the mouth.
What is the recovery time for this procedure?
You will be presentable in public within 2 weeks – swelling will be the limiting factor.
What about diet?
Chewing is limited immediately following surgery, while a soft food diet is required for several days.
When can I become active again?
The recovering patient should avoid any rough contact, blows or pressure to the chin or strenuous activity. You can exercise again 3–4 weeks after the surgery.
When can I return to work?
Patients usually want to plan at least one week off work.
When can I expect to see the final results?
The final result will be seen in 1–2 months.
What can I do in advance to make coming home easier?
Plan to spend this time at home engaging in light activities such as reading and watching television. It might be a good idea to gather a supply of your favourite books, magazines and DVDs.
What if something goes wrong?
Once you’re home, contact your surgeon immediately if you:
- Experience shortness of breath, chest pains, or unusual heart beats.
- Notice any signs of infection.
- Experience bleeding.
- Experience a sudden increase in pain.
Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
