Chemical Peels

How does it work?

Chemical Peels induce exfoliation of the skin through the application of various chemical agents. After treatment, the new regenerated skin is smoother, less wrinkled, and more uniform in colour - giving a more youthful look overall. It will enhance your appearance and your self-confidence.

What areas can be treated?

Chemical Peels are usually used on the face. However, other areas of the body can be treated, although this can be less effective.

How is the treatment performed?

Firstly the skin is thoroughly cleansed with acetone or another cleanser. The chemical agent is then applied (or 'painted') on to your skin in sections, where you may feel a warm and stinging sensation which could last about five to ten minutes. A cold pack is used should any burning or stinging occur. Patients can choose to have an intravenous anaesthetic if they find the treatment particularly uncomfortable. After a period of time the peel will be removed. Depending upon which peel has been used, your skin may be slightly pink to red, but this will soon disappear.

How long does it last?

The results of a Chemical Peel will last longer if you take good care of your skin afterwards. However, if you continue to smoke, sunbathe or neglect your skin, it may become damaged again. Although you will, of course, continue to age - your wrinkles will be softened and your appearance made fresher, depending upon the depth of the peel.

Are there any side effects?

You may experience a slight stinging sensation during the treatment, but this will disappear quickly. Depending on the sensitivity of the skin, some pinkness may occur. In some instances flaking of the skin after your peel is normal; this should subside during the first few days post-peel.
