What to do when you go home after Cheek Implants

After cheek implant surgery you will feel tired and sore. You will be given pain medication and you will need lots of rest.

You should also have someone else drive you home on the day of the procedure. If you live alone, you should have somebody with you for at least the first night.

Make sure you wear a loose blouse or shirt that does not have to be pulled over your face.

What is the recovery time for this procedure?

Recovery takes about 2 weeks.

When will my stitches be removed?

The stitches, which are inside the mouth, are dissolvable.

Will I have bruising and swelling?

There may be some, but it is unlikely. Swelling will be minimal.

Will I have scarring?

There will be inconspicuous scars in the mouth.

What about diet?

Chewing is limited immediately following surgery, while a soft food diet is required for several days.

When can I be active again?

The recovering patient should avoid any rough contact, blows or pressure to the cheek or strenuous activity. Although you can walk about and do very light activities from the next day it is advisable not to do anything strenuous for 7-10 days.

When can I return to work?

Patients usually want to plan at least one week off work.

When can I expect to see the final results?

You will see a final result at 2 months.

What can I do in advance to make coming home easier?

Plan to spend this time at home engaging in light activities such as reading and watching television. It might be a good idea to gather a supply of your favourite books, magazines and DVDs.

What if something goes wrong?

Once you’re home, contact your surgeon immediately if you:

  • Experience shortness of breath, chest pains, or unusual heart beats.
  • Notice any signs of infection.
  • Experience bleeding.
  • Experience a sudden increase in pain.

Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
