What are the risks associated with Canthoplasty?
Canthoplasty (lower eyelid surgery) is an invasive procedure that cuts through the orbicularis muscle, removes the ligament, and then reattaches the lower eyelid to the side of the eye socket. Like all surgical procedures, with canthoplasty there is always a possibility of complications. Although these complications are extremely rare, they can include:
- Excessive swelling.
- Infection.
- Bruising.
- Blood clot behind the eyeball (Haematoma).
- Scarring.
- Reactions to the anaesthesia.
- Complications with any pre-existing medical issues.
The most common symptom of this complication is typically a steady, stabbing pain similar to glaucoma. If this is the case, removal is necessary.
What other risks are there?
The anatomy of the canthus (the angle formed by the meeting of the upper and lower eyelids at either side of the eye) is delicate and complicated. If canthoplasty surgery is not expertly performed the junction between the upper and lower eyelids may become rounded, retracted or deformed either immediately or after several years.
Will I have scarring?
Usually the scar will be concealed in a crease, but it is better to discuss this with your surgeon before the operation. You may also ask for before and after photos.
What about prominent eyes, shallow eye sockets, and inadequate cheek projection?
Sometimes canthoplasty may result in unintended downward retraction. If overdone in patients with normal or deep-set eyes, it may, on the other hand, result in an unnatural upward slant to the eyes.
Also, eye sight alteration may occur - however, this is usually temporary.
What if permanent damage occurs?
If permanent damage occurs you might need further surgery to correct the problem.
