What to do when you go home after Canthoplasty?

After canthoplasty you may have slight swelling and bruising, which is only natural. However you should be up and about without any problems. The bruising and swelling will subside in a few days to a week, and there shouldn’t be much pain; although your eyes may feel a little dry and therefore a little uncomfortable.

In the first week after the procedure, patients should avoid any activities that may dry up the eyes, including:

  • Reading.
  • Watching television.
  • Wearing contact lenses.
  • Using a computer.

How can I minimise bruising and swelling?

During the first few days of recovery, keep your head elevated as much as possible.

When will my stitches be removed?

The doctor will remove the stitches between two and seven days after surgery.

Can I wash my face?

The face may be washed on the day following the procedure.

Can I wear make-up?

Make-up may be applied one day following the procedure.

When can I resume normal activities?

You may feel well enough to resume normal activities around the tenth day of recovery.

How should I protect my eyes?

For the first couple of weeks following the surgery, dark sunglasses are recommended to protect the eyes from irritation caused by the sun and wind.

Also, throughout the first three to four weeks post- surgery:

  • Frequent naps are recommended (your eyes may tire easily for the first few weeks of the recovery period).
  • Any activities that increase blood flow to the eyes should be avoided, including bending, lifting, sporting activities and even crying.

When can I resume exercise?

Your surgeon will inform you of this.

When can I return to work?

In most cases, you need only 1-2 days off from work; however, this will depend on the individual patient.

When can I expect to make a full recovery?

Most people are fully recovered within 3 weeks.

What if something goes wrong?

Once you're home, contact your surgeon immediately if you:

  • Experience shortness of breath, chest pains, or unusual heart beats.
  • Notice any signs of infection.
  • Experience bleeding.
  • Experience a sudden increase in pain.

Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
