What are the risks associated with Breast Uplift Surgery?
Like all surgical procedures, with breast uplift surgery there is always a possibility of complications. Although these complications are extremely rare, they can include:
- Infection.
- Adverse reaction to anaesthesia.
- Excessive bleeding.
- Delayed wound healing.
- Loss of nipple sensation.
- Unsatisfactory results.
- The need for second or sometimes third procedures.
- A slight chance of developing deep vein thrombosis.
Also, excessive internal bruising (haematoma) occasionally occurs and may require removing some stitches to wash out the bruising from beneath the skin. This has no effect on the long-term outcome of surgery.
Will I be sore and have scarring?
The breasts feel sore and sensitive for a few days and there will be some swelling and bruising, which should soon pass. Very occasionally the junction of the "T" scar underneath the breast may take slightly longer to heal than the rest of the stitch lines.
What about smoking and the healing process?
Women who smoke are more likely to heal slowly and develop prominent scars.
Will I have sore nipples?
Small sores may develop around the nipples following surgery. These can be treated with antibiotic cream.
Could the shape of my breasts differ?
After the procedure, there is a risk that your breasts may be slightly mismatched. Your nipples may also be unevenly positioned.
What about breastfeeding?
Because most of the milk ducts leading to the nipple are removed, there is a risk that you will experience an inability to breastfeed.
What about loss of sensation?
There is a risk of permanent loss of feeling in the nipples or breasts.
What about tissue death?
Although this complication is rare, loss of blood supply to the nipple and areola can lead to tissue death. However, the nipple and areola can usually be rebuilt from skin grafts taken from other parts of the body.
