Causes of Obesity
Obesity is an increasingly common problem that is affecting more and more people. Naturally there are many ways in which someone can become obese whilst some are harder to overcome than others, many of the factors can be avoided or changed.
Eating patterns are established at an early age.
Being obese as a child can often result in obesity in later life, showing a clear way in which lifestyle choices can be influenced by parents, such as eating habits.
The main thing people point to when they think of obesity is unhealthy eating, including an unhealthy diet and eating patterns. If someone was to eat a lot of fatty, processed foods then they are likely to build up a lot of calories in their bodies.
What people should always be striving for is a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, protein and carbohydrates. Of course it is not just the choice of foods but also the quantities consumed and remember alcohol also contains calories. When you eat fatty foods, the body stores this as energy so that you can use it up in the form of exercise and physical activities.
Not enough exercise?
If someone does not get enough exercise they will instead turn this energy into fat, leading to weight gain. It shows that obesity can be caused by an imbalance between the intake of calories and the burning of these through exercise.
Therefore a lack of physical activity or any exercise can lead to obesity, which is a common problem in the modern world where many jobs to not have physical tasks and we use cars to get from A to B.

Lifestyle or genes?
But lifestyle choices are not necessarily the only factors that lead to obesity as explored above. Your genes also play an important role as well as medical conditions. Some people have genes that make them feel hungrier and some can remain slim without rigorous exercise, therefore if your family members are obese then there could be an increased risk of you having the same condition. There are certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome which have been linked to obesity, which produces too much in the way of steroid hormones.
Lack of exercise and a poor diet are the most commonly linked to obesity so combating these problems should always be an aim. Some people think that surgery is the answer to the problem, but it should be noted that most procedures will only be carried out when all other options have been covered, or if there is a serious risk to health.
