Body Contouring After Weight Loss

There are various side effects to dramatic weight loss, whether it be by exercise and dieting, or if it is through bariatric surgery. One of the most common issues facing people in such situations is the abundance of excess skin and fat that might be left behind.

Loose skin will need tightening.

The loose skin is the result of the stretching and expansion of it during the period when you might have been overweight and sometimes weight loss cannot remove all traces of fat, meaning there can still be excess.

What is the solution to loose skin?

This is where body contouring following weight loss comes into play. It is a series of surgical procedures designed to restore your body’s appearance by getting rid of the excess skin and fat that might be making the shape of your body seem irregular.

As well as aesthetic issues, these irregularities also affect day to day activities such as finding clothes that fit and they can also become uncomfortable, particularly if you have any skin problems.

Because this affects various parts of the body, surgical treatments to correct this are rather large procedures and can be made up of various different surgical remedies that correct problems with excess skin on the face, neck, breasts, upper arms, abdomen, the thighs and beyond.

The scale of the surgery will obviously differ from person to person, with some only needing minor treatments that will leave smaller less obvious scars and others may require bigger surgical procedures. You will discuss with a surgeon what kind of treatment would be the best option for you.

What kind of procedures are involved?

The procedures involved include a face lift to remove excess skin from the face, where an incision is made around the hair line and behind the ears to minimise scarring.

Other treatments include a neck lift, circumferential lower body lift, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), buttock lifts, thigh lifts, breast lift and upper arm lift amongst others. To be a good candidate for these sort of surgeries you will have lost a dramatic amount of weight causing excess skin (though some time, around a couple of years, should have passed between the weight loss and the surgery).

As with any type of surgery you should be in general good health to make the procedure safer to carry out – this includes overall health and issues such as diet and whether or not your smoke.

You will discuss with a cosmetic surgeon all of the implications and they are likely to tell you to have realistic expectations – there is no use hoping for the perfect body following surgery, but an improved look is very manageable. As with any surgery there are certain side effects that could affect matter, which you should discuss with your cosmetic surgeon.
