What to do when you go home after Blepharoplasty?
After blepharoplasty, the surgeon will probably lubricate your eyes with ointment and may apply a bandage.
In the first week after this procedure, patients should avoid any activities that may dry up the eyes, including:
- Reading.
- Watching television.
- Wearing contact lenses.
- Using a computer.
Your eyelids may feel dry at first, but eye drops can help with this.
How can I minimise bruising and swelling?
During the first few days of recovery, keep your head elevated as much as possible. Some bruising and swelling will be experienced during the first and second weeks, however the majority of the swelling usually subsides after the first 10 days.
When will my sutures be removed?
The doctor will remove the sutures five days after surgery.
What about scarring?
Scars will form as a result of the surgery. Overall these scars heal relatively well, but will differ in each individual patient.
When can I resume normal activities?
You may feel well enough to resume normal activities around the tenth day of recovery.
How can I protect my eyes after blepharoplasty?
For the first couple of weeks following the surgery, dark sunglasses are recommended to protect the eyes from irritation caused by the sun and wind.
Also, throughout the first three to four weeks post- surgery:
- Frequent naps are recommended (your eyes may tire easily for the first few weeks of the recovery period).
- Any activities that increase blood flow to the eyes should be avoided, including bending, lifting, sporting activities and even crying.
When can I exercise again?
Avoid strenuous activities for about three weeks.
When can I return to work?
You should be able to return to work approximately 10 days after the surgery.
What if something goes wrong?
Once you're home, contact your surgeon immediately if you:
- Experience shortness of breath, chest pains or unusual heart beats.
- Notice any signs of infection.
- Experience bleeding.
- Experience a sudden increase in pain.
Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
